Seems like Sarah and I have been knitting forever but not everyone has that experience. Some of us come to the party a little later. So how does a person get started?
I’ve been thinking about that. It seems like there is a strong oral tradition of passing knitting techniques from person to person. I think that the easiest way to learn how to knit is to learn from someone else. If you have friends who are knitters, I would start there. In addition, most local yarn shops offer beginning knit and crochet classes. Learning this way gives you another advantage: meeting great people at your local yarn shop. They’re a fantastic resource as you embark on this pastime / hobby / passion / insanity.
Another way to learn to knit or crochet is to harness the vast resources on the Internet. There are fantastic sites, podcasts, and YouTube videos to learn the basics as well as any number of more advanced stitches and techniques. The resource page on this site is dedicated to sharing some of the great tools we’ve found during our own journey.
Happy Knitting!
